Cat Power, Google Maps, and Star Trek… I love the Internet. Mammoth update.
I dislike describing music immensely. Rather than painfully watching me stumble over words AIM, my friend Johnny decided to Google my newest musical obsession, Cat Power. The search yielded an interesting Urban Dictionary response… with an ad for that new online Star Trek movie on the side.
I will say this much about Cat Power. Her music doesn’t reference any paritcularly talented felines, and in fact it has nothing to do with cats at all. She (being Chan Marshall, a completely human and talented singer) never erupts into choruses of meows or anything. But it’s still fun to shout “CAT POWER!” as if advocating feline rights…
Although we all know I’m still very much a dog person.
So… Star Trek… What happened here? The trailer made me giggle. Okay, I’m way too exhausted to giggle. It made me snicker. The shirts-flying-off, stuff-blowing-up attempt to make Star Trek edgy… well, they failed. At least on me. I possessed no interest whatsoever in Star Trek ten minutes ago, and still have no interest in it. As of now, I’m just scared. I know this particular incarnation is independent and blah-blah-blah, but… I don’t know. It’s like trying to make Barney appealing to teenagers. There are some things you just don’t attempt.
On to new business. I absolutely love Google Maps… I’ve wasted many a valuable study hour mapping out trips I probably won’t take for ten years. I also like to go back and map out trips I’ve taken…This, for example, is the mammoth Discovery trip I took with the entire Teaching Fellows Entering Class of 2007 (498 of us roamed the Old North State in dress clothes for a week…)
Also, any North Carolinian who just can’t quite take the Old Crow Medicine Show… But still has some attachment to this place… Check out Against Me!’s cover of “Wagon Wheel.” YouTube it yourself. I’m sleepy.
Yeah, I know, no updates for… months? I don’t even know. I’ve been extremely occupied being freezing cold and absolutely exhausted up here in the mountains. We’ve had highs in the low thirties all week… And a good chance of a nice snow tonight! I here y’all might get some, too. Strange weather, so… wintry.
And that’s the bulk of my news.
p.s. The Culbertson family is up to 8 dogs now. Spike, the American Bulldog/Boxer/Something Big mix, Leo the Toy Poodle, Max and Angel the Shih tzus, Muffy the Mutt, Snowflakey the Cocker Spaniel, Jesse the Wheaten Terrier, and Scruffy the Schnaunzer-Something who lives at my Grandma’s.

Meet Spike.
My little brother woke me up from my late afternoon nap.
“Cass, we gotta surprise for you!”
“You got a dog, didn’t you?”
“Yes, I mean, no, um… We just ate at the best Hardee’s, ever.”
“Right.”
“But… It’s like hundreds of pounds bigger than Snowflakey [our cocker spaniel]!”
More pictures to follow… But this is the one on Craiglist that inspired my family to rush to the Hoke County Animal Control to rescue him from euthanization, scheduled for this morning.

If you’re looking for a dog…
The Harnett County Animal Shelter starts new construction this week, and many of the animals need to be adopted, soon (like, tomorrow). Space will be limited in the kennels for a while, so adopting an animal now will really help the shelter and the animals!
Adoptions are only $20! The shelter is open daily for adoptions from 1-4 except for Wednesday.

I spoke with Tino Medina, the supervisor at the shelter. Unlike a lot of the hype circulating on blogs and such, 4 p.m. tomorrow will not ring in a mass euthanization of animals. Nonetheless, they need people to adopt animals to free up space!
A local volunteer takes pictures of animals at the shelter and posts links to the albums on Craigslist.

Schnoodles and Scotties and Shih Tzus, oh my!
If you’ve held any face-to-face conversation with me in the past few weeks, you’ve inevitably heard me ramble on about dogs. I used to despise the idea of pets… But… My sister’s toy poodle Leo has me sold. I now spend hours looking up various breeds, trying to decide what sort of dog I want when I get my own place. I am always looking up animals in the local shelters. There are about two right now I am seriously considering adopting… I just want so many different little dogs right now, it’s insane.
A friend of mine sometimes thinks she’ll be an “old cat lady” when she grows up. You know, the spinster with 40-some-odd cats in the big Victorian house at the end of the lane. Well, I think I’m just going to collect miniature dogs when I grow up so…
17:23] friend: i’ve always been convinced i was going to be the crazy cat lady
[17:24] friend: lol we can live next door to each other and throw them at each other and say its raining cats and dogs
[17:24] friend: lol
[17:24] me: lol omg yes!!!!!
[17:24] me: that might be a quote in my blog lol
[17:24] friend: …i’m really bored btw
I love random instant message conversations. And no, I would never, ever throw animals around like raindrops… But the image of a few calicos and cocker spaniels bouncing around in the air is an amusing one.
… Maybe if we put a trampoline underneath them…
I’m kidding.
